Woods for the bears
February 7, 2006
Vast new swathes of Canada are open for your bear business. A major blow is struck for preserving the planet’s wildlife.
It’s taken ten years of struggle but Canadian environmentalists are celebrating today – after an historic conservation agreement with the government of British Columbia.
A temperate rainforest, almost twice the size of Belgium, will now be protected from an ever expanding logging industry.
The vast region in Western Canada is known as Great Bear Rainforest and is home to the rare Spirit Bear.
Almost a third of it will be fully protected from commercial logging, with the rest subject to strict management.
